Frequently Asked Questions

What is Morse code?

Morse code is a character-encoding scheme that represents letters and numerals using sequences of dots (short signals) and dashes (long signals). It was developed in the 1830s for telegraph communication.

How does bidirectional translation work?

Typing in the text box converts each character to its Morse equivalent. Typing in the Morse box splits on spaces to decode each code group back to a character. Word boundaries are represented by /.

Why do some characters show as "?"?

Not every Unicode character has a Morse code equivalent. Characters outside the supported set (Aโ€“Z, 0โ€“9, common punctuation) are replaced with ? and a warning is shown.

Does the audio playback require internet?

No. Audio is generated entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API โ€” no server calls are made. It works offline once the page is loaded.

About the Morse Code Translator

Our free Morse code translator converts plain text to International Morse code and decodes Morse code back to readable text in real time. Whether you are a ham radio operator, a student learning Morse, or just curious, this tool handles the full alphabet (Aโ€“Z), digits (0โ€“9), and common punctuation marks.

How Morse Code Works

Each letter and digit is represented by a unique combination of dots (ยท) and dashes (โˆ’). A dot is a short signal and a dash is three times as long. Symbols within a letter are separated by a short gap, letters are separated by a longer gap, and words are separated by an even longer gap โ€” represented here as /.

Audio Playback Timing

  • Dot: 100 ms tone
  • Dash: 300 ms tone
  • Gap between symbols: 100 ms silence
  • Gap between letters: 300 ms silence
  • Gap between words: 700 ms silence (represented by /)

Use Cases

  • Amateur radio (ham radio) operators preparing CW transmissions
  • Students and hobbyists learning Morse code
  • Escape room designers encoding puzzle clues
  • Film and TV productions verifying Morse accuracy
  • Emergency preparedness training (SOS = ยท ยท ยท โˆ’ โˆ’ โˆ’ ยท ยท ยท)

Features

  • Bidirectional: text โ†’ Morse and Morse โ†’ text
  • Full International Morse Code table (Aโ€“Z, 0โ€“9, punctuation)
  • Audio playback using the Web Audio API โ€” no plugins needed
  • Stop button to cancel playback at any time
  • Copy buttons for both text and Morse outputs
  • Built-in reference chart for all supported characters
  • Warning when unsupported characters are encountered
  • Works entirely offline โ€” no data sent to servers

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Morse code?

Morse code is a character-encoding scheme that represents letters and numerals using sequences of dots and dashes. Developed in the 1830s for telegraph communication, it is still used in amateur radio today.

How do I decode Morse code to text?

Type or paste Morse code into the Morse code box. Separate each letter with a space and each word with a forward slash (/). The tool decodes it to plain text automatically.

Can I hear the Morse code as audio?

Yes. Click Play Morse Audio to hear beeps generated by your browser's Web Audio API. Dots are 100 ms, dashes are 300 ms, with 100 ms gaps between symbols and 300 ms between letters.

Does this tool work offline?

Yes. All translation and audio generation happens in your browser. No data is sent to any server, and the tool works offline once the page has loaded.
